Arizona might be known for its deserts, but did you know it’s also packed with incredible fishing spots? From striped bass in Lake Havasu to trout in the White Mountains, there’s a perfect fishing hole for everyone. Whether you're casting a line for the first time or a seasoned angler looking for a new favorite spot, here are the best lakes and rivers to check out.
Top Lakes for Fishing in Arizona
1. Lake Havasu – A must-visit for striper bass fishing! I had great luck reeling them in, along with some little bluegill in the London Bridge Channel and some catfish in hidden coves along the lake.

2. Roosevelt Lake – One of Arizona’s best bass fishing lakes, home to trophy-sized largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish.
3. Bartlett Lake – Great for bass fishing, especially in spring and fall, with healthy populations of catfish and crappie, too.
4. Canyon Lake – A beautiful spot but, for me, it was all about the view—I had no luck fishing here. Maybe you’ll have better odds?

5. Saguaro Lake – Close to Phoenix, this lake offers excellent yellow bass, largemouth bass, and catfish fishing opportunities.
6. Big Lake – If you’re after trout, this is the spot! Located in the White Mountains, Big Lake is famous for rainbow, brook, and cutthroat trout.
7. Lake Powell – Striped bass heaven! Also a great place to catch walleye, catfish, and smallmouth bass while enjoying breathtaking canyon views.
8. Lake Pleasant – Known for striped bass and white bass, plus a great location for night fishing.
Top Rivers & Streams for Fishing in Arizona
1. Salt River – Seasonal trout fishing in the lower Salt, plus bass and catfish. Bonus: It’s a great place to spot wild horses while you fish (and the occasional tuber)!
2. Verde River – A hidden gem with smallmouth and largemouth bass, catfish, and even trout in the upper stretches.
3. Little Colorado River – A prime spot for wild trout fishing near Greer, perfect for a peaceful mountain escape.

4. Black River – Deep in the White Mountains, this river is home to brown and Apache trout, making it a top pick for fly fishers.
5. Colorado River (below Lake Mead) – Loaded with trout and striped bass, this stretch of the mighty Colorado is an angler’s paradise.
Fishing Highlights & Personal Favorites
I’ve had some memorable fishing trips across Arizona—some successful, some not so much! Canyon Lake left me skunked, but Lake Havasu was a win, especially in the London Bridge Channel. The White Mountains didn’t bless me with any fish, but I did see plenty of crawfish scuttling around. It’s all part of the adventure!
Jake and I have been itching to try our hand at fly fishing, and what better place to start than AZ Fly Shop? We've heard great things about their workshops, so we're planning to check one out soon. From casting techniques to fly selection, we're excited to learn the ropes and (hopefully) land our first fish on the fly!
Plan Your Next Fishing Trip
Before you cast your line in Arizona, make sure you're licensed! You’ll need an Arizona fishing license, which can be purchased online or at local vendors. If you plan on fishing in national forests or parks, don’t forget about special passes—such as the National Forest Recreation Pass or the America the Beautiful Pass—which grant access to those beautiful public lands.
Whether you're after a peaceful day by a mountain stream or reeling in a monster bass on a massive lake, Arizona has a spot for you.
